Week 7: Silence and Solitude
Our Weekly Spiritual Practice: 30 MINUTES OF SILENCE ALONE
  1. Designate a 30 minute (minimum) slot this week. It could be day or night, weekday, or weekend.
  2. Get away from your usual people, places, routine etc. Drive/walk/run to a park, mountain, beach, lookout, hiking trail or similar.
  3. Officially start your 30 mins of silence – no using your audible voice!
  4. Practice being still and quiet, off load the mental, emotional and spiritual noise. Practice hearing God’s voice (use the 4 sermon points), read God’s Words in the Bible, meditate on them. Contemplate God’s wonder and splendour in nature.
  5. After 30 mins you may want to respond to God by talking or writing.
  6. Use the small ‘Solitude and Silence’ section in the ‘How to Unhurry’ workbook to guide you in establishing this habit in your weekly routine. CLICK HERE
Discussion Questions
  1. When do you our could you practice the spiritual discipline of silence and solitude?
  2. One person read aloud Eccl 5:1-3. How does the noise of other voices or foolish words obscure people from God’s presence? Why is silence, slow speech and careful steps, important in prayer?
  3. Pray the ‘Prayer of Silence’ (see below) together and then listen for God’s still, small voice. Share one at a time how you usually hear the Voice of God…
